Upgrade WordPress via SSH

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

The Automatic Upgrade, ever since it came into the scheme of things, we had mixed reactions. We told some of the customers that you won’t need us for doing this. WordPress has made it so easy that it’s available at a press of a button. Nay! The customers went to somebody else :-(

The following steps worked for us, login via SSH and ch to the directory where the wordpress blog resides (It is assumed that you do not have a sub directory called wordpress beneath this one) -

wget http://wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz
tar -zxvf latest.tar.gz
cd wordpress
cp * ../ -R -f
cd ..
rm wordpress -R
rm latest.tar.gz

Now, you can login as admin and do the database patch and get going. Post your experience in the comments below. Please take backups!

WalkScore – an interesting addition

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

One of the real estate sites that we were working on required us to explore WalkScore. It’s an exciting new way to look at things – very practical also. Do visit the site and see what it does. See our implemenation using WalkScore API and Google maps API

It’ll be a novel addition to Real Estate portals and sites. At a point, we expect it becomes a standard!

Gmail and it’s “on behalf of” woes!

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Looks like it’s coming to an end today. This post at google’s official blog explains how to settle this out. I’ve always had this issue with the gmail address that I used for my official email. We recently moved our email to gmail servers – after trying it out for so many of our customers. And today comes the news :( – Anyways, it’s good to know that you can do it and I’m sure gmail keeps the conversation in-tact.

The Outlook can now look clean of the recipient’s machine…

What happens to Meta Descriptions in the web page

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Recent times, I’ve been brought to focus on SEO, a subject I strongly avoided to look at but had no choice but being forced to. I always believed that if your site is worth it, it’ll show up on Search Engines otherwise, make efforts to make it “worth it”. This is some 6-7 years ago. This still holds true but it’s good to know how things happen. And I’ve been doing some reading, watching etc.

One thought that was always believed was, no search engine, including google, never cared about what was written inside the meta tags – keywords and description – since they were the first ones people started to stuff when they learnt about search engines and the importance of being on the first page. But today, I watched a video from Matt, that indeed talks about it – that google started looking up things in meta description as well.

So, as a final thought – just keep the appropriate content in appropriate places and things will work one way or the other.

Where is FREE Google Apps

Friday, July 17th, 2009

It looks like Google is underplaying the free offering of the Google Apps for mail, calendar and all the other stuff. Probably, they’re going to stop offering this. I found this link http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html on the web which worked today. Not sure if it’s going to be there for ever.

Alright, ride the wave while it’s there. I did not see free request for additional users either, so try stating the number of users needed to the expected one upfront.

Good luck!
